The design may have been based on Middlesbrough Borough Asylum.

Around c.1940 - EMS (Emergency Medical Service) 'hutted' hospital was developed to north east of grounds which briefly used part of the main hospital wards. Following WWII the EMS site used as Fulford maternity and general hospitals.During 1960 -70 a Day hospital, occupational therapy, admission, industrial therapy and social club were added.

Prior to 1906 patient's from the administrative area belonging to the City of York were boarded out from 1845 - 1861 at North and East Ridings County Asylum ( Clifton Hospital ). From 1861 - 1906 used York Lunatic Asylum ( Bootham Park ) wasutilised but deemed unsuitable for pauper patients by the Commissioners in Lunacy, causing the construction of the City's own premises. The Initial cost was £130,000 and Majority of initial patients were boarded from other areas to fill the building to workable capacity. 450 patients at peak occupancy following World war II.

Following the merger with Bootham Park Hospital , chronic patients were retained at Naburn with acute services located at Bootham Park .Between 1986 -88 Naburn patients were relocated to Clifton and Bootham Park hospitals allowing the site to be closed.

All buildings were demolished around 1989 with exception of Acres Farm. Site remained undeveloped until c.1996-8 and is now occupied by a Designer Village retail development. Extensive plantings survive within grounds.
